Description: Retirement Support Group provides and supports choices, active community membership and continued friendships for older retired individuals with developmental disabilities, over the age of 50, by utilizing group supports. This is a consumer driven group that addresses many of aforementioned areas utilizing a peer support format.
The intent of the Association on Aging with Developmental Disabilities' Transitional Retirement Services is to identify St. Louis city residents with developmental disabilities who are working in a sheltered workshop, are at least 50 years of age, and have the need or desire to pursue retirement. Once identified, A.A.D.D. assists people with adjusting to retirement. For many individuals, socialization and relationships in the workplace are key developing new friendships in selected acitivities.
In House Staff Training/Transitional Retirement Planning supports older individuals with developmental disabilities and their families in expanding their knowledge of available resources and in making informed decisions about financial planning, will trusts, advanced directives, housing options, extended illness by creating an individualized transition plan.
Social Club is a large group that offers socialization programs for persons who have developmental disabilities who live in the community with their parents. Activities occur three times a month. By participating in this program, individuals have opportunities to experience a variety of community activities, make choices for themselves, develop friendships, and develop skills to relate with others. This program also benefits the families of participants who live at home; individuals have a place to belong and be accepted without needing family support.
